Whitehaven Marina at Night

Ashore at Whitehaven Marina Whitehaven, a Georgian town on the North West Cumbrian coast, originated in 1633 as a small fishing village, developing into the third largest trading port in the UK in the century, exporting coal world-wide. The harbour was also home to an important ship building industry with over 1,000 vessels being built in Whitehaven.

Nowadays the town boasts several excellent visitor attractions, which illustrate Whitehaven’s colourful history. You can visit the Haig Pit Mining Museum and learn about the Whitehaven’s deep coalmines ; explore the Beacon Visitor Centre with its interactive displays telling the history of the town and harbour; or tour The Rum Story and learn about rum production, the shipbuilding industry and Whitehaven's part in the slave trade.

Whitehaven has a wide selection of specialist shops, bars and restaurants, all of which are within 5 minutes’ walk of the Marina.

Sporting facilities in the town include a swimming pool, sports centre, and golf course. Rosehill Theatre runs a varied programme of events throughout the year, with theatre, music, films and children’s shows all on offer.

The surrounding natural environment provides a wealth of activities for all ages. The Lake District National Park is within easy reach and the scenic coastline provides beaches, cliff walks, a local RSPB reserve, as well as panoramic views to the Isle of Man and SW Scotland.

Whitehaven is the official starting point for the popular cross country cycle tour, the Coast to Coast (C2C), while the picturesque village of St Bee’s, 4 miles south of Whitehaven is the start of the ‘Coast to Coast’ walk.
