Whitehaven Marina praised for quick thinking emergency response during Whitehaven Airshow drama

June 29, 2015

Whitehaven Marina received high praise from organisers of the Whitehaven Airshow for their quick response to the drama that unfolded last friday evening when one of the Red Devils parachutes refused to open. A Red Devil parachutist was caught by his colleague in mid air and both landed safely in the sheltered water of Whitehaven Marina in front of a crowd of over three thousand people who all saw the drama unfold in front of their eyes.

The planned emergency procedures strictly followed by Whitehaven Marina and the Marina team’s quick thinking meant that the two parachutists were back on dry land tucking into a pie and pint within ten minutes.

Whitehaven Marina Manager, Simone Morgan said “We take the responsibility to keep our water environment safe and clean very seriously and we have many varied events throughout the calendar year for which we practice our emergency procedures. Its good to reassure members of the public and our customers that our planned procedures work and the marina safety boats respond rapidly.

Whitehaven Airshow organisers said:- “One team member caught his team-mate and brought him into Queens Dock. Our safety procedures worked perfectly and a huge thank you to Whitehaven Marina for getting them out of the water so quickly.”

The quick thinking of the Red Devils team and the marina safety boat coxswain meant that incident passed without injury to anyone.

Annual Sea Lock maintenance completed at Whitehaven Marina

March 18, 2015

Whitehaven Marina is pleased to announce the successful completion of its annual Sea Lock maintenance in readiness for the coming summer season. The lock gates, that have successfully protected the marina and the 400 boats inside from the awesome power of the Irish Sea after another year of heavy storms, have undergone a thorough structural inspection together with the  maintenance of the hydraulics, electrical systems, seals, anodes and backup systems. This year the focus was to carry out repairs to the pontoons on either side of the lock that vessels secure to on entry or departure. Much of the work was carried out by the cheerful Whitehaven staff in very cold and wet conditions!

Mark Bowden, Operations Director of Marina Projects who operate Whitehaven Marina, commented  “Like the massive sea walls which form the outer and inner harbours, the Sea Lock is a vital part of the infrastructure that protects the town from flooding; controls the water levels inside  and provides a sheltered haven for the various types of vessels that use Whitehaven Marina”.

The Sea Lock was constructed in 1998 at a cost of £6.7 million and formed the integral part of the regeneration of Whitehaven Harbour and town. Approximately 3400 vessels a year pass through the Sea Lock which is manned 24/7.

The Lock closure and its planned maintenance, has been timed to cause the least disruption to Whitehaven Marina users and this year, unlike in 2014, there was no requirement to fully drain the lock so the time that the Sea Lock was closed to traffic was reduced.

Whitehaven Marina is the most comprehensive marina on the North West Coast of England, with extensive facilities; friendly and professional staff and easy access to the cruising grounds of Scotland, the Isle of Man, Ireland and North Wales.

For further enquiries about the Marina and the Lock and its operation please contact or call 01946 692435 or visit

2015 Whitehaven Sea Lock Closure

February 1, 2015

2014 saw one of the best summers in decades but also some of the worst storms in 50 years, which meant the piers, quay walls and lock gates protecting the marina and the town withstood a tough test against the awesome power of the Irish Sea. With that in mind and with winter now upon us, the team at Whitehaven Marina is busy planning the winter maintenance programme, which includes a long list of important tasks that need to be carried out on the sea lock.

This year’s annual sea lock closure will be between 0800 hours on Monday 23rd February 2015 and 1700 hours on Friday 27th February 2015.

A busy summer for the lock gates

During this time there will be NO access whatsoever through the lock and the area will be fenced off, preventing access across the pedestrian bridge. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are sure you will understand the need to carry out this annual maintenance to ensure that the gates work safely and reliably over the next twelve months.

Unlike the 2014 closure during which the lock barrel was pumped dry to allow the huge, 56 tonne outer gates to be refurbished, this year all of the work will be carried out while afloat. Despite not emptying the lock we will be setting to work on a long list of essential maintenance tasks from pontoons and vessels including:

  • Upgrading and servicing bearings
  • Refurbishing pontoons
  • Adjusting centre and side seals
  • Anode inspection and renewal
  • Preparation and painting of gate skins
  • Maintenance of the gauge board system
  • Cleaning, scrubbing and scraping
  • Servicing backup systems
  • Electrical inspection and maintenance
  • Hydraulic inspection and maintenance
  • Overall structural inspection

The lock gates stood up against last years heavy winter storm

If you have any questions or queries about the sea lock closure or the lock operation in general please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01946 692435 or email, we will be happy to help.

January 13, 2015

The Tall Ships Youth Trust has been gifted a 16 metre Ketch by Bolton School. Tenacity of Bolton, built in 2007, provides the perfect sail training environment for young people. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Trust to grow its fleet and to expand its sail training offerings.

With this in mind, the Tall Ships Youth Trust has decided to operate the Tenacity of Bolton out of the North West with Whitehaven Marina as her base. This opens up wonderful cruising grounds around Scotland, the Isle of Man, Ireland and North Wales as well as making sail training with the Trust more accessible to young people and groups in the area.

Tenacity of Bolton: Arriving in Whitehaven in Spring

Tim Law, Marketing and Operations Director commented “We are really looking forward to being up in Whitehaven. The marina offers fantastic facilities and the surrounding area opens up new waters for our sail training crews to explore. Having a new voyage programme for Tenacity of Bolton and the North West makes 2015 an exciting year for Tall Ships.”

The Tall Ships Adventures summer 2015 programme has just launched. Highlights include the Caribbean, the Biscay Challenge, the Fastnet and the Arc. Although focused on young people between the ages of 12-25, the Trust also offers exciting adult voyages for anyone up to the age of 80.
