SS Balmoral visits Whitehaven en route to the Isle of Man

In July we saw the SS Balmoral arrive in Whitehaven to pick up paying passengers to the Isle of Man. When this vessel comes to Whitehaven she adds a touch of class and nostalgia to the Harbour. Today the Harbour tends to berth more modern leisure and commercial vessels particularly those used to service the off shore wind farm industry.

Other boats of interest that have visited us recently are:-

James Cook (Ocean Youth Trust North), Glasson Sailing Regatta, 103 year old nobby, Najad 470 in the yard, 85 foot Sunseeker

Waving the flag locally at Whitehaven

Whitehaven Marina has a new Free Flow Flag that will now be used for their large sea lock.

The marina at Whitehaven ran a competition recently for local children between the ages of 7 and 11 to design a Free Flow Flag.

The flag needed to be bright and vibrant so that boats easily spot when Free Flow is in operation and also the general public can cross the lock on foot. Free Flow is when both gates are open to the sea which allows the Harbour to be refilled and act to flush out the fresh water that drains into the basin from surface water outfalls. When the flag is flying it indicates that the lock is open and so pedestrians cannot cross the lock for period of up to 2 hours a day.

Beth Houghton (pictured above), a year six pupil from local Jericho Primary School, was the proud winner of the competition.

Whitehaven Marina on the north west coast of the UK has over 400 fully serviced marina berths and is protected from the Irish Sea by some amazing 265 year old inner and outer breakwaters and the large sea lock that keeps the marina, and in fact the whole town, safe.

Winner of the competition, Beth, was presented with a large printed version of her flag design.

Whitehaven Marina Manager, Simone Morgan, said  ”We had a fantastic response to the competition and 378 entered from different schools in and around Whitehaven. Beth’s design won because it was clear, bright, easily identifiable and with a nautical theme.”

She added “It’s great to get the local community involved in the marina and the kids have been so interested in how the lock works etc so it’s been really educational for them too.”

The response was so good that the marina have decided to run the competition again next year.

Whitehaven Social Events in 2015

December 8, 2015
marine boat jumble in Whitehaven Marina

Our Boat Jumble is growing year on year

We have had some great fun events during 2015; the boat jumble in its second year was a success and we will be running that again in 2016. The Film Festival in June hit the national press when one of the Red Devils became tangled in his parachute and was rescued by our very own Allan Finley.

We finished off the season with a night with Josh Hall at the Beacon. His global sailing adventures were fascinating to see and listen to and I think inspired us all. We are now on the lookout for next year’s guest speaker!! Check out our events pages for 2016
