Seabins coming to Whitehaven Marina

May 9, 2017

Whitehaven Marina is delighted to announce that the Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project has secured £18000 grant to install sea bins in the marina.

Marina Manager, Simone Morgan says “this project is so good for raising awareness about how litter and pollution can make its way into the marina but also about what can be done to help. We who work in the marina or berth boats here, obviously care passionately about pollution in our seas, but this is also a great way to educate everyone, young and old, about protecting our marine environment. Well done Whitehaven Harbour Youth Project!”

The Land Rover of the CCTV World

October 4, 2016

Recently installed the ‘state of the art’ CCTV system comprises 6 stainless steel Red Vision cameras, a high definition recorder and multi screen control system. The cameras are the ideal option to cope with the occasional inclement weather at Whitehaven Marina.

The cameras are monitored from the sea lock control tower, with our vigilant lock keepers on hand 24/7 to ensure that full security is maintained day and night.
Lock keeper Robin Lithgow comments “Paired with regular dock walks, the cameras are a great way to keep the site safe and secure – with the new, high definition system any unauthorised persons or untoward activity will be detected more easily.”

Events for our customers

We have had several very successful events this season. From Barbecues through to sailing races. Including Barts Bash on 18th September when 18 vessels locked out in the morning to take part, building on the success of last years event.
However the most recent event was “A talk through time”
On a wet and windy evening in Whitehaven, nearly 50 berth holders braved the elements to enjoy nibbles and wine, hosted by Sharon and Denver at Wellington Bistro before a historical presentation based on the development of Whitehaven and West Cumbria.

“A Talk through time” was a pictorial exploration of the West Cumbria, split in two segments. The first focused on the history of Whitehaven over the last 100 years, with particular emphasis on the part played by the harbour in the industrial and social development of the town. The second half covered a wider geographical area and looked at a range of industry including mining, farming and the more recent nuclear developments.

The speakers were Gerard Richardson and Ivor Nicholas who have collaborated on four books comprising decades of images taken by Ivor Nicholas  during his career as a photographic journalist in the area.

The Wellington Bistro  are now participants in our Berth Holders Loyalty Club Card and offer 10% off for all annual berth holders.  Why not pop in for lunch or afternoon tea and cake and make use of your new discount.

The event was a great success and everyone seemed to find it enjoyable as well as informative.

Thank you to everyone who attended.

Maintenance around the Marina

Its not glamorous. But a necessary part of operating a marina is maintaining the site and all the fixtures.

In addition the boat hoist in the boatyard has had a facelift with a new cab fitted.

New weather station for Whitehaven customers

September 28, 2016

Whitehaven Marina are delighted to announce that a new weather station has been installed in the marina and is now reporting live data to the WeatherLink website.

Vital for those boating customers at Whitehaven who are planning a cruise to or from the Marina and useful even if you are going to sit on your boat in the marina or do some odd maintenance jobs onboard. It will also be handy for local folk who maybe can’t quite see what the weather is like on the coast – we all know how the weather can vary within the space of a few miles.

The link to Whitehaven Marina’s weather can be found here

As well as current conditions it also gives a forecast and historical data.

Assistant Marina Manager at Whitehaven Marina, Tony Taylor said “Ive already received some great feedback from customers regarding the weather station. The link shows everything you could need from precipitation to wind strength/speed etc etc and the hourly changes. Plus a 10 day forecast. Our customers love it.”

Car Parking Improvements

August 11, 2016

Thank you for your patience whilst we have scrubbed and cleaned the Bulwark Quay ready to be re lined and new security gates fitted. The relining will allow more cars to be parked on the area. With increased numbers of bertholders and more people working in Whitehaven town, the pressure on car parking generally is severe. As a result, we appreciate that we need to control and manage the parking on the Bulwark Quay better than we have done.

Car park reconfiguration of the Bulwark Quay, a new and upgraded CCTV system and weather station are all projects that we are working on at the moment. Marina security is a vital part of what we offer and so the new HD (high definition) cameras and recording equipment will be a vital part of providing that security. With over 10 cameras constantly surveying the marina basins; the car parks and boat yard, the marina is monitored and recorded by the duty Lock Keeper 24 hours a day.

SS Balmoral visits Whitehaven en route to the Isle of Man

In July we saw the SS Balmoral arrive in Whitehaven to pick up paying passengers to the Isle of Man. When this vessel comes to Whitehaven she adds a touch of class and nostalgia to the Harbour. Today the Harbour tends to berth more modern leisure and commercial vessels particularly those used to service the off shore wind farm industry.

Other boats of interest that have visited us recently are:-

James Cook (Ocean Youth Trust North), Glasson Sailing Regatta, 103 year old nobby, Najad 470 in the yard, 85 foot Sunseeker
