On Tuesday 30th April, Military vessels from the Netherlands arrived at Whitehaven Marina as Dutch, French and British Royal Marine commandos put the finishing touches to a two-week long major training exercise preparing them for conventional warfare.

Dubbed ‘Joint Warrior’, the exercise began in Scotland and culminated at Whitehaven as the port was recognised as having ideal facilities for loading troops, combat vehicles and equipment on to the two big ships anchored offshore.

Major Dave Hammond, of Three Commando Brigade, said: “This is an exercise including elements of Dutch and French forces thrown in. In Whitehaven the Dutch marines are loading up ‘snow’ vehicles used in Norway and also royal marines landing craft.

“It’s a training exercise where we get tested to make sure we are at strength for operations…We saw Whitehaven as a good natural port for the ship to shore loading operations.”
