All Aboard! James Cook at Whitehaven

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

Have you seen the big yellow boat? You can’t miss it! James Cook, a training vessel for the Ocean Youth Trust North, arrived at Whitehaven early on Sunday 20th July and will be taking various trips to and from the Marina until early September. With plans to return to Whitehaven on 26th July, it will be berthed  in Queens Marina, come and take a look!

Whitehaven Marina provides a perfect base for James Cook’s summer programme; with a fantastic tidal access window, excellent crew facilities, proximity to the town and access to other areas and Marinas in the Irish Sea. The voyages provide a great opportunity for children to acquire a range of life skills, work within a team and experience the challenges of the sea along with learning valuable knowledge about measuring distance, and estimating voyage time.

The Sea Cadets Crew

Designed to be sailed by young people many of whom come from non-sailing backgrounds, this 54 tonne steel-hulled ketch caters for crew both young and old and crew with disabilities. The groups that sail gain invaluable experience and become fully involved in sailing the boat; steering, drills, safety, learning the ropes, preparing a boat for sea and getting the sails up and down.  During the 6 week period the boat will travel to and from Whitehaven collecting different groups of young people from the Cumbria area to begin a 6 day expedition. Currently the boat is holding crew from Whitehaven, Workington and Maryport all part of the Sea Cadets.

Tall Ships visit Whitehaven

Thursday, July 3rd, 2014

The weekend of the 20th June saw Whitehaven host the Apprentice Ship Cup, an exciting sailing competition with two tall ships mooring on the sugar tongue participating in the industry sponsored event. Thousands flocked to the West Strand waterfront to explore the continental market, street theatre, admire this year’s ships, and soak up the sun on what was a fantastic weekend! Ships involved this year were; Lady of Avenel (31m,) Maybe (25m,) and Yacht challenger One 2041 (22m.)

The tall ships arriving at high water

The tall ships arrived at 5.30pm on Friday 20th June. Staff at the Marina arranged free flow for the event to allow them to enter and exit the harbour, and space on the Sugar Tongue was allocated for their stay. The tall ships began in Liverpool then raced their way to Whitehaven and Belfast, allowing 173 young apprentices, ages between 16- 25 the opportunity to challenge, develop and learn new skills in the battle for winning the cup. Three teams organised by the Merseyside Adventure Sailing Trust tackled the course with apprentices from Peel Ports, Balfour Beatty and Sellafield taking part. Duties involved; preparing the ship for sea, handling ropes, lookout and watch procedures, life boat and emergency duties, steering, navigating and setting sails, all within professional control. This gave a unique experience enabling the apprentices to build friendships, self-esteem and provided them with a great challenge. On the sun drenched Friday evening the participants rustled up a BBQ, the harbour provided a great location for the young people to bond and embark upon their adventure. On completion of this regatta an awards dinner was held in Liverpool to celebrate the success and unique achievements of the young apprentices.

Gerard Richardson, Chief executive of the Whitehaven Festival Company said “I am delighted with the event, sometimes everything works including the weather and the tall ships weekend was one of them. We have had great feedback about the continental market and the street theatre. The Marina area is absolutely made for this sort of event and I’m hoping we can stage a lot more.” The continental market always goes down well with the locals, boat owners and visitors to the event. Selling food and products from all across Europe, there really was something for everyone, with arts, crafts, scarves, clothing and a range of delicious treats. Who could say no to a German Sausage finished off with a French Crepe in the company of some great street theatre!

Following the successful home and garden show at the Marina, the Tall Ship weekend made an impressive image on the harbour and gave our berth holders lots to explore within Whitehaven. There are various upcoming events to look forward to such as Whitehaven Live on 5th July, The Coast to Coast Adventure Race beginning 28th August, and our Boat Jumble on 30th August along with many more. What’s not to admire about the beautiful coastal town and Marina at Whitehaven, it’s great that there is so much going on.

New face at Whitehaven

Friday, June 27th, 2014

Many of you will already be aware that we now have Jenny as our Marina Office Administrator.  Jenny Hewitson joins us as we wish Ashley good luck in becoming a mum!

Born and raised on a farm in the countryside of Cumbria, after school Jenny moved to Manchester to study Graphic Design and Advertising at University.  She thoroughly enjoyed her time in the city and the chance to experience a different way of life but the pace was really quite different to what she was used to!  Living away from home gave Jenny the confidence to see the world and she embarked on a round the world trip of a life time with a friend, starting in South East Asia, on to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hong Kong.  “What an amazing 5 months!” she says!

Jenny sits in the new Whitehaven Marina office

Now back in her home in Cumbria, Jenny is fairly fit and not only enjoys playing netball for a local team but also running with a group from St Bees!  “My heart has always been at home, now living back in West Cumbria I am delighted to be part of Whitehaven Marina team, keeping the administration and reception duties under control.”

Make sure you come and say hi to Jenny next time you’re at the marina and make her feel welcome!

UK Docks expand to Whitehaven

Monday, June 16th, 2014

Whitehaven Marina is pleased to welcome UK Docks Marine Services on-site as a new service provider as the marine engineering firm expand their existing Tyneside, South Shields and Gosport, Hampshire operations.  UK Docks have widened operations to the West Coast in order to service current contracts as well as develop operations within the growing wind farm industry.

UK Docks will be operating from one of three bays in the purpose built, state of the art boat shed completed in 2008.  In addition to the standard expected facilities, the building provides overhead gantries, compressed air and vacuum systems, and under floor heating – one of the best equipped and modern boat sheds in the North West of England.

Mark Bowden, Operations Director commented, “We are really pleased to be furthering our relationship with UK Docks and expanding the service offer available at Whitehaven.  The investment from UK Docks will not only benefit the commercial operations but also provide new employment opportunities in the region.  This will increase the much needed marine skills on offer in the area as they bring these in from their wider operations in order to train and develop a local work force.”

This new partnership between UK Docks and Whitehaven Marina is an extension of the successful relationship with Marina Projects, the marina’s parent company, as the engineering firm already has an existing operation at the company’s Gosport boatyard, Endeavour Quay.  The Whitehaven Marina team will be responsible for lifting and handling the wide range of vessels the UK Docks contracts require them to service and maintain, just as at Endeavour Quay.

Gary Wilson of UK Docks added, “This is an exciting time for UK Docks.  We are proud to be expanding our operations to an additional site.  Our existing relationship with Marina Projects and Endeavour Quay made Whitehaven Marina the obvious choice of location.  We are looking forward to working with the marina team and increasing our work and skill force in the area.”

2014 boating season welcomed with new Marina Office

Monday, June 9th, 2014

Whitehaven Marina is proud to be welcoming its new season berth holders and visitors to our brand new Marina Office.  Completed only last month, the new first floor office provides marina staff with a fantastic view over the marina which in turn further improves customer service and security.

The new look office from the water

Part funded by parent company Marina Projects Ltd, the state of the art building enhancements complete the 2013/14 investment programme which also saw an additional 140 walk ashore berths installed in West Strand Marina.  The new look office now provides a welcoming customer reception area as well as a meeting room and separate office space which both staff and customers will benefit from.  In addition, the temporary office Portakabin has been removed to increase car parking on the Bulwark Quay.

Inside the smart new office

Mark Bowden, Operations Director commented, “We are really very pleased with the new office.  It was originally an attic space that housed the services of the ground floor facilities below but it is now a spacious and airy environment for our staff and customers to enjoy.  By clever design and engineering we were able to lift one side of the roof by 20 degrees allowing full length windows to be installed so the duty team can look across Lowther Marina and to the Sea Lock.  Previously a rather ordinary and functional looking, single floor building, it now really adds to the overall exciting and modern look of the Whitehaven waterfront – especially the glass atrium which houses the stairs and lift to the first floor.”

The significant investment by Marina Projects Ltd not only highlights the commitment to Whitehaven Marina but also the recognition of the importance of continuing to attract visitors to the harbour and so to the town of Whitehaven.  The marina is always looking at ways to improve the overall service to customers and the new office space not only enables better security and safety but also a lovely environment for those visiting.

This season Whitehaven town plays host to a variety of events including the Tall Ships Festival, 20th – 22nd June; and Whitehaven Live, 5th July.
